HOW TO PAY FOR IN-HOME CARE

In 2017, the average cost of non-medical home care services in the United States was $21/hour*. However, the expense can vary depending on several factors such as location, the extent of care required, and in-home care provider.

People use one of the following methods or a combination of these methods to pay for in-home care services.

Choose any of those Payment Options

Personal Savings / Income

Since Medicare does not include the cost of non-medical home care, one has no choice but to use their personal funds and income to cover the expense.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance or whole life insurance that has a long-term care rider may cover your expenses of the home care services, provided that it is mentioned explicitly in the policy. Another suitable alternative to consider is converting the life term insurance policy into a plan that includes home care services or canceling the policy completely in exchange for cash.

Medicaid

Medicaid shall wholly or partially cover non-medical home care expenses of individuals who meet their respective state’s eligibility requirements. Coverage is usually provided via Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) or via Medicaid waivers to individuals whose earnings and possessions fall below a defined threshold. Waiting lists are typical.

Medicare in-home care benefits

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 or older, younger people with certain disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In most cases, when ordered by a physician, Medicare Parts A and/or B will pay for medically necessary services provided in a home setting over the short term. However, a senior who requires only nonmedical care (e.g., meal preparation, bathing assistance, housekeeping), won’t qualify for Medicare coverage of these services.

Medicare-certified home healthcare agencies are companies contracted by Medicare to provide a host of covered home health services. Medicare only pays for services provided by an agency that meets its quality standards. A senior who’s part of a Medicare Advantage plan may have to use a certified home health care agency that participates in their plan’s network.

Nonprofit Support Waiver

Nonprofit for Home Health care gets grant funding. Home healthcare groups that have a nonprofit do fundraisers and collect donations and grants to provide those services without charge. Individuals in the community who cannot bear the expenses of in-home care services can receive help from the non-profit.
